Life

"I was within and without, simultaneously enchanted and repelled by the inexhaustible variety of life."

The only reason I really hate the great gatsby is that it was filled with images, metaphors and other literarily devices that actually made it the important novel that it is today. But the story was pure drivel, it was as interesting as a raccoon looking for dinner in the various trash cans of a neighborhood. Somewhat interesting, but in the end all he got was a half eaten apple and something that resembles toast.

Don't get me wrong it had its moments, especially with character development but quotes like this: "Her voice is full of money" reminds me of a kuwaiti soap opera.

I however, love this quote. Many a part of my interest died immediately after putting this book down, but you reminded of it. Maybe I should give it another read.

I like Salman Rushdie's definition in an interview here:
"...it's a kind of hyperrealism. There's painting like this where so much is put in so exactly. Too much information, you know, too much detail: every dog, every hair on every dog, and every nail on the dog's toes. Hyperrealism can create an atmosphere of surrealism because nobody sees the world in such detail."

I did not really enjoy reading white teeth either(another example of hyper realism in novels)but it had some interesting parts, which made it worth a read..same goes for the great gatsby.

talking about cheesy lines;how about this,"My eyes were lost, swimming , floating free in the shimmering lagoon of her steady, even stare. Her eyes were large and spectacularly green. It was the green that trees are, in vivid dreams. It was the green that the sea would be, if the sea were perfect."(shantaram, and yet another example of hyper realism)
Cheers

I first read the book when I was 17, and i must say that back then i found it very interesting.
Great literature, with a twisted romance though.
